The passage ‘Prince of tides’ is an article written by Piyush Roy and published in the Hollywood gossip magazine. The text features a Bollywood icon actor named Saif Ali Khan. The intended targeted audience are people who read these types of magazines as well and mostly individuals who are interested in Bollywood actors and the Indian film industry and are captivated by Bollywood fanatics while following up on different movies. This is supported as the text is mainly focused on the career life of the actor and his roles in different movies as well as touching on some details about his personal life including his family. The purpose of this text is to inform the audience about Saif’s Khan successful career path that made him “undoubtedly Bollywood’s most unplanned success story in its super league of stars.” Which led him to be the ‘prince of tides’. Moreover, this article informs the audience on obstacles he faced that are both external such as struggles in film roles and during his time being a producer, as well as internal such as barriers that include his family members.

Essentially, the text describes Khan rise to success along with his three brothers and his new style of that he brought into the film industry that changed the face of Bollywood. Much like the beginning of any magazine the passage starts off with a very with a quote that to begin his story of success, this starts to motivate his audience on the beginning of this text he explains that he “was just having fun’ in the start of his career although as he starts to accomplish higher roles he took it as a successful lifestyle, thus additionally the author tries to indorses his path by casting him as “The man with the funny face” in his early years and not much attention was paid to him in contrast to his brothers; however later in his life he was recognized as the face of comedy acting and worthy of “ a serious hero’s showcase”.

The theme presented in the article is human nature, temptation, and determination, these are mostly indicative of Saif Ali Khan’s personality, as he continued to strive for success in order to reach the top and where he currently stands now as an admired icon. Saif Khan is presented as a carefree actor and one that has a ‘simple and laid-back attitude’, thus the theme portrayed is mostly developed through the identification of happiness and the struggles he encounters were portrayed mostly as the path to success; This slowly builds the understanding that the article is trying to promote him rather than writing a plain factual biographical insight about him.  

The author embeds a very upbeat attitude towards the text and this is showed through the word choices that are put in the text such as the use of “unfettered”, “unpredictable”, and “undoubtedly” in the first few lines giving the reader a sense of lively hood and happiness towards the success of this actor. Furthermore, it creates a tone of anticipation as the reader intends to know more about how this individual persona and wildering achievements. The mood shown is seen through a positive light as the author is expressing rather than critiquing, there is also a use of opinionated language that expresses a happy mooed such as when stated: “starting a distant last, struggling”. In addition, it could be explained that the mood is calm as throughout the text it narrates the steps took from Saif throughout his life and career. The metaphor used in the tides also expresses the mood as “The prince of tides” in order to show the growing success of the actor just like that of a tide, furthermore, it shows the attraction that is given by the people that allowed his success to be raised.

The structure of the prince of tides is very similar to that of any other gossip magazine, with its very intriguing and captivating title That gives a glimpse to the readers about his rise to success, as well as a big portrait of the Bollywood actor himself, Saif Ali Khan. Furthermore, the structure is categorized into paragraphs that show a timeline structure starting off with who he is then his personal life and building up to his career life and the roles he played and his rise to success.
